Doug Kelly

In a  musical career spanning three decades, Doug has helped forge the course of folk and world music in Australia.

Starting out in Sydney, on the rock circuit, he gravitated towards the folk scene, forming the band ‘Tansey’s Fancy’ including Mara Kiek and Linsey Pollak, proceeding to present the beauty of traditional music to a largely ‘unbaptised’ audience.  Initially drawn by the haunting melodies and tunes of the Brittish Isles and medieval Europe,  he soon added the musical heritages of Eastern Europe and the Middle East to truly become a ‘world musician’ long before it was fashionable.

Through an association with Linsey Pollak he had the opportunity to play in the community of and learn the music of various ethnic cultures.  ‘Tansey’s’ was followed by a significant artistic collaboration between Doug, Greg Shehan, Linsey Pollak and Andrew De Teliga, Davood Tabrizzi and Paul Koerbin culminating in the band ‘Churinga’, which still, twenty years later, attracts interest, proving to have stood the test of time.

Doug has played all over the world,( quite literally representing Australia)   being at the ‘cutting edge’ of Australian music in the band ‘Sirocco’ with whom he recorded three of the bands top selling C.D’s.
